Shirley created the first PEN Canada/Paul Kidd Courage Award, which honours the memory of Paul Kidd, a former journalist with The Spectator. The award was presented to journalist Paul William Roberts, and will be given annually to a Canadian journalist who has shown the willingness to risk her or his life and career in pursuit of a story and takes an independent viewpoint.
